Stories by Vonnegut

Here's a funny and insightful clip of Kurt Vonnegut teaching on stories.

Notice:
  1. How all our stories end. They all end with "off-the-scale happiness."
  2. How the character gets to that happiness. They get it through a relationship, changing themselves, etc.
  3. How different our stories are from real life. How many people do you know who end their life with "off-the-scale happiness"? How many boy gets girl stories end with perpetual good fortune?
We all long for the ultimate good fortune depicted in our stories, but the paths to it presented in those stories utterly fail. So notice how different the gospel story is. We receive the "off-the-scale happiness," but we receive not through our own efforts, or through anything any one of us could ever accomplish. We receive it solely through the work of Jesus, who went to inconceivable depths of ill fortune to bring us up with him into the infinite heights of happiness.
